The BCI 601 is the implanted part of the BONEBRIDGE system consisting of:
Auditory perception works in two ways. Usually, sound waves in the air reach the tympanic membrane through the ear canal and cause it to vibrate. The ossicles transfer these vibrations to the inner ear and the cochlea. In individuals without hearing loss, almost all the sound information is processed in this way, which is known as air conduction.
However, the skull also transfers sound waves directly to the cochlea. The BONEBRIDGE takes advantage of this phenomenon, which is known as bone conduction. The BCI 601 is anchored directly in the bone under the skin and vibrates the skull. With the BONEBRIDGE, natural sound signals are amplified and more acoustic information can reach the cochlea.
The BONEBRIDGE surgery takes about one hour. During that time, the BCI 601 is implanted under the skin behind the ear. The surgery is performed under general or local anesthesia. After two to four weeks, when the sutures have healed, the implant can be activated by putting on the SAMBA audio processor. Since the implant lies completely under the skin, it is not visible from the outside and complication rates are very low.
